What is Pyrography? Pyro-graph simply means “burned picture”.
Most commonly known as "wood burning", pyrography is created by etching, or engraving the image into a surface with a tool which is essentially a small branding iron on wood, leather, paper, or other media. The image is created as the burning tip scorches the surface of the media, varying speed and temperature can change the tonal value of the burn, giving the pyrographer some control to give the feel of shading and color. It is essentially using the tool to draw on the wood. The hand piece is about the length of a pen, and approximately the width of a dime. Other techniques are used such as stain, paint, and other methods to add color to some pieces. Pyrography is a very old art, the origins of which are still debated. As long as it has been around, it is rare and little known. Almost anyone has seen many paintings in their life, but most people have neve r heard of pyrography. As an artist I can tell you it is the most difficult medium I have worked with. It is much more difficult to burn a good image into wood than it is to draw or paint it. Not only is it much more time consuming, but you can not erase, or paint over any mistakes. Because of the media, and the sepia tones, Pyrography has a very unique and rustic look. Each piece unless designated as a “Limited Edition” is the original piece. Each piece is handmade, one of a kind, and personally signed. Limited Edition prints are personally signed and numbered. |
